Statement of Bishop R. Daniel Conlon
Regarding “Vos estis lux mundi”

Pope Francis' issuance of the motu proprio "Vos estis lux mundi" is very welcome. It provides one more significant step in the Catholic Church's commitment to prevent the abuse of young people in its midst, to deal properly with offenders, and to provide care for those who have been hurt. As a bishop, I expect to be held to the same standard as every other priest or, for that matter, any adult serving in the Church.

I need to study the provisions of the motu proprio, and I will have some discussion with our diocesan Review Board, to be sure that any steps that we need to take in the Diocese of Joliet are taken. More information for the people of the diocese and the public in general will be forthcoming as appropriate.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet
